Mystery over death of suburban wife and mother found strangled in her Mercedes Benz

By RACHEL QUIGLEY
UPDATED: 16:46 GMT, 27 January 2012

The murder of a wife and mother-of-two who was found strangled in her car after she disappeared from her home has baffled her close-knit community with her husband saying he has 'no clue' what could have happened.

Jane Bashara, from Grosse Point Park, Michigan, last spoke to her husband of 26 years Bob on her way home from work on Tuesday.

When he arrived home the TV was on and her work ID was there, appearing as if she had made it home from work.

He reported her missing later that night after calling friends. Her body was found the next morning near Hoover in the backseat of her Mercedes Benz.

Her cellphone and purse were found close by.

Mr Bashara said his wife would have had no reason to be in the area and has no idea what happened to her.

New allegations surface in Bashara murder

Report: Blood and hair found in Bashara garage
Daughter says she does not believe father is guilty
Attorney claims couple had 'open marriage'
A Michigan man who police have called a person of interest in his wife’s murder is scared he could be facing life in prison, and his attorney now says the couple had an “open marriage,” according to a new report.

Bob Bashara and his daughter Jessie both professed his innocence in the murder of Jane Bashara in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“I know that he did not do it,” Jessie Bashara said, and she denied that there was any violence in her parents’ relationship at all.

“My belief is that it was an open marriage,” Bashara’s attorney, David Griem, said in the same report, responding to claims that his client was having an affair.

Police conducted a second search of Bob and Jane Bashara’s Grosse Pointe Park home Wednesday, according to Detroit News reporter George Hunter. On HLN’s“Nancy Grace” Thursday, Hunter said his sources told him investigators found blood and hair in the garage that is being sent out of state for testing.

Jane Bashara was found dead in her Mercedes in a Detroit alley about eight miles from the house on January 25. Police said autopsy results showed that she was strangled.

Griem told reporters at a press conference last week that Joe Gentz, a man who police have confirmed to HLN is related to the case, gave investigators several conflicting stories alleging that he and Bob Bashara were involved in the murder. Gentz had done manual labor at Bashara’s rental properties over the last two or three years, Griem said, and they recently had a heated disagreement about billing. According to Griem, Bashara gave police Gentz’s name early in the investigation as someone who might want to harm his family.

An attorney appointed to represent Gentz, Susan Reed, told HLN Thursday that her client had been in police custody last week and was later released, but she declined to discuss the case further.

“I just want truth. I want justice. I want real justice to be done,” Gentz said in an exclusive interview with WDIV.

A court determined Wednesday that Gentz can still have supervised visits with his 10-year-old daughter, who is currently in foster care, according to WXYZ.

Griem told the Detroit Free Press that police were leaking information about what Gentz said to them because they have no evidence against his client

Source says murdered Grosse Pointe Park woman's husband failed polygraph

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

Spoiler:

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police tell 7 Action News that the husband of a murdered Grosse Pointe Park woman is a person of interest in the case and sources now say that he failed a polygraph exam administered late Friday.

Bob Bashara was at the Grosse Pointe Park police station to undergo a polygraph with officers who are investigating his wife's murder.

The death of his wife, Jane Bashara, has been ruled as a homicide and it has been determined that she was strangled . Her body was found Wednesday morning in the back seat of her Mercedes Benz . The car was parked on Detroit's east side, in an alley where it was found by a tow truck driver.

Bob Bashara left the police station shortly after 9:00 p.m. Friday without commenting.

This was the second time in two days that Bob Bashara had spoken with investigators. He spent about an hour at the police station on Thursday. He did not undergo a polygraph at that time.

While Bashara was at the station Friday, police officers were at his home . They took photographs inside and out and they left carrying computers and other items.

Sources tell 7 Action News that a cadaver dog was sent in to the Bashara home Friday night looking for human scent. They also say that it is still unclear just where Jane Bashara was killed, but at this point police do not believe she was killed inside of her car.

Bob Bashara had reported his wife missing at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“I got home about five after 8:00 and she wasn’t around and I relaxed and figured she was out running an errand," Bob Bashara explained to 7 Action News on Thursday.

"As 9:00 and 9:30 approached, I became much more concerned and I got more people involved," he said. "I called my kids to see if they had heard from her and they hadn’t. I had been calling her cell phone to find out and then as time got on I involved the police because I was concerned there might be something wrong," Bashara said.

Wednesday night, a candlelight vigil was held in front of Grosse Pointe South High School in memory of Jane Bashara.

More than 100 people prayed, sang and shared their memories. When Bashara's husband and daughter showed up, there were endless hugs and expressions of sympathy.

Funeral arrangements have also been set:

Visitation is Monday 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Peters Funeral Home at 8 Mile Road and Mack.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church on Lakeshore next to War Memorial.

Cops: Evidence contradicts Grosse Pointe Park husband's version of events

Police sources told The News that evidence shows Robert Bashara, 54, spent time with his wife Tuesday night, which contradicts the story he told investigators when he reported her missing Tuesday.

Bashara, who reported his wife missing Tuesday at 11:30 p.m., told police he was working at a rental property the last time the couple spoke that day. He said they agreed to meet at home at 8 p.m., but his wife wasn't there when he arrived. The TV was on, and her company ID card was in the home, he said.

Bashara told police he hadn't seen his wife after she returned from work. But evidence shows Bashara had contact with his wife that night, police sources said.

Joseph Gentz, 48, turned himself in to police early Tuesday and spent hours detailing how he strangled 56-year-old Jane Bashara

Grosse Pointe Park— A St. Clair Shores man told police he was paid less than $2,000 to kill a Grosse Pointe Park marketing executive, a police source told The Detroit News.

Joseph Gentz, 48, turned himself in to police early Tuesday and spent hours detailing how he strangled 56-year-old Jane Bashara, police said.

"It was a hit for hire," a police source told The News.

Evidence shows Gentz and the victim's husband, Robert Bashara, contacted each other dozens of times in the days leading up to the murder, which refutes the story Bashara told investigators, police sources said.

Gentz, a former tenant of Robert Bashara, told police he was at the Bashara home on Jan. 24 when Jane Bashara came into the attached garage yelling at her husband about something, sources told The News.

"The wife comes in telling the husband to move the car, or move something; that's when (Gentz) said he strangled her," a source involved with the investigation said.

Police said Jane Bashara's body, which was found in the back seat of her Mercedes Benz SUV on Jan. 25, was wrapped in her coat, which had road salt on it, matching the salt on the side of her vehicle. That evidence, along with broken fingernails and extensive bruising on the victim's body, suggests she struggled in the garage and brushed against the SUV at some point, sources said.

Sources: 'Joe' claims to be forced into murder plot

Sources said Joe forced into murdering Jane Bashara

Published On: Feb 01 2012 01:14:44 PM EST Updated On: Feb 01 2012 01:29:33 PM EST

Jane Bashara

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. -
Multiple sources have told the Local 4 Defenders that "Joe," the man Grosse Pointe Park police have in police custody, had admitted to strangling Jane Bashara.

Sources said "Joe" told investigators he was paid to strangle the 56-year-old mother and he did it while being threatened, while being held at gunpoint.

“Joe” said a second person drove Jane’s SUV and her lifeless body down to the east side of Detroit, while he followed in a second vehicle, sources said.

Jane’s car was left in an alley in the area of 7 Mile Road and Hoover Street, and the second person jumped in the car with "Joe" and they drove off, sources said.

Jane was found dead Jan. 25.

Local 4 is not releasing "Joe's" full name because he has not been charged. The second person he is referring has also not been charged, therefore the name is being withheld by Local 4.

Local 4 has learned that before moving to Grosse Pointe Park, Joe lived in a St. Clair Shores apartment.

"He had weapons in his house and he made it aware to people that he had guns and knives in the house," said former neighbor Debra McWherter.

McWherter and another former neighbor describe Joe as temperamental. They said that on several occasions he flew off the handle and more than once police were called.

"He walked back and forth outside my door threatening he'd be back, saying he was going to kill me, that he was going to 'F' me up," said a neighbor who requested not to be named in this story.

McWherter said police were notified of Joe's temper.

"We told police he is capable of anything. I mean, he would pace around here like a caged bear," she said.

Joe has been in police custody since Tuesday morning.

No charges have been brought forward in the ongoing murder investigation.

Bashara's tenants describe his demeanor the day his wife was found murdered

Posted: 02/02/2012

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Joseph Gentz remains locked up as police and prosecutors plot their next move in the Jane Bashara murder case.

Gentz turned himself in on Tuesday morning – sources say he did so because he believed Bob Bashara was going to implicate him as being the killer. Gentz is claiming Bashara was involved too, but his story keeps changing.

Meanwhile, Bashara’s tenants said Wednesday that Bashara was all business the day his wife was found murdered.

Courtney Johns, who rents a property owned by Bashara’s alleged mistress and managed by Bashara himself, says when she called Bashara to tell him detectives reached out to her, Bob was all business.

“He said that if anyone came here asking questions about the property to let them know that it was owned by ***** and that ***** are just friends,” Johns said.

Police sources say that property owner is Bashara’s mistress.

“It struck me as off that when I first called Bob and told him police had asked some questions that he didn’t tell me his wife had been murdered,” Johns said.

Man: Day of Bashara's Murder, Gentz 'Highly Agitated' at Bar

Posted: Feb 01, 2012 10:03 PM CST

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -- FOX 2 is learning more about Joseph Gentz, the alleged accomplice in Jane Bashara's murder who remains in police custody. We were poking around in the neighborhood near where he lived recently and ran into a guy with the same last name who said we are not related.

"Strange, very strange. Doesn't fit in here at all in this neighborhood. A Cabbage Patch, that's what we call it. He don't fit," said Dennis Gentz.

Getz says he 'helps-out' at a bar on Kercheval near the Detroit-Grosse Pointe line. The area is known as the Cabbage Patch neighborhood.

Gentz, same last name, said he is no relation to Joe Gentz, a possible accomplice in the murder of Jane Bashara.

Dennis said Joe was a regular at My Dad's Bar on Kercheval. Joe's beverage was always beer, but after Jane Bashara was killed, he switched drinks and drank water.

"He came in here that Tuesday that she got murdered," Gentz explained.

"What did he look like? Any different?" FOX 2's Ron Savage asked him.

"He was agitated, drinking water, no money and agitated. Highly agitated," he responded.

"Drinking water, is that unusual for him?" Savage inquired.

"It is unusual for him," Gentz said.

"What was his drink usually?" Savage asked.

"Beer. Budweiser. Something like that," replied Gentz.

Does Dennis Gentz believe Joe Gentz is capable of killing someone?

"Easily, easily," he said. "As soon as he walks in the door, keep [my] eye open at all times."

"As security here you had to keep an eye on him?" Savage questioned him.

"All the time, constantly," Gentz responded.

"You two had the same last name, same spelling. You say it's German derivative, and he would tell you he thought you two were related?" asked Savage.

"He never ended with that. 'How you doing cousin? How you doing?' You're not my cousin. I don't know you. I don't want to know you. Not related whatsoever," said Gentz.

Local 4 Defenders: 'Joe' has been released

Man who says he was involved in Jane Bashara's murder is out of jail

Published On: Feb 03 2012 01:06:39 PM EST Updated On: Feb 03 2012 06:47:26 PM EST

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. -
Local 4 Defender cameras rolled Friday as Grosse Pointe Park police released Joe from custody.

Joe got out of an unmarked police car just before 1 p.m. and right into the back of a waiting vehicle. He had no comment.

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Joe's release

He had been in police custody since walking into the Police Department Tuesday and admitting he had been involved in Jane Bashara's murder.

Jane Bashara, 56, was found dead Jan. 25 in her SUV that was parked in a Detroit alley. She had been strangled.

The Local 4 Defenders also learned that the Bashara family is requesting protection following Joe's release. A letter, sent to Grosse Pointe Park police by attorney David Griem in part reads:

“In light of the foregoing circumstances, the Bashara family requests police protection/surveillance of their family/home during whatever period of time that Joe is out on the street.”

This week, Joe has been telling police he was there for Jane's murder, but sources have confirmed his story has changed on several occasions.

Sources said Joe was released because there was not enough evidence to verify his story of what happened the night Jane Bashara was killed.

Her husband, Bob Bashara, has been pegged a person of interest by police. But he has not been charged.

-- Before moving to Grosse Pointe, Joe lived in this St. Clair Shores apartment.

from Detroit News:

But an investigator involved in the case believes Bashara provided Gentz' name as a "preemptive strike."

"He said, 'There's this guy Gentz who might come out and say that I paid him to kill my wife, but it's not true,'" the source said. "He basically gave us a road map of who to look for."
"Thinks he's so smart."

from Detroit News:

'He didn't try to hide affair' A police source told The News that Bashara recently put in an offer to buy a house on Kensington Avenue, a few blocks from his home, and that he planned to move his longtime girlfriend, a Wayne State University employee, into the house.

There are several photos online of Bashara and the 50-year-old woman together. "He didn't try to hide the affair," a police source said. "I think it was just because he was arrogant."
Police sources said the Basharas were in an estranged relationship. "It was a fake marriage for appearances' sake," a source said.

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. -
Tonight, Joe, the man who says he was an accomplice in the Jane Bashara murder is a free man. But just who is Joe?

After being in police custody for 72 hours, the self proclaimed accomplice was released on Friday. Local 4 cameras rolled as Joe was dropped off in a suburban parking lot, but now he’s no where to be found.

Neighbors that know him said they normally see him coming and going.

“He was different,” said a neighbor who identified herself only as Mrs. Barber.

According to Mrs. Barber, when she heard Joe had confessed to killing Jane Bashara she was speechless.

“It made me a little more cautious. I’m already cautious, but it made me feel a little eerie to know someone just a few doors down,” said Mrs. Barber.

But for people at Pointe Hardware and Lumber, where Joe often bought his supplies, the allegations don’t add up to the Joe they know.

“When they said he was involved with it I was kind of surprised. Never really had any problems with him,” said a worker at the store.

On Saturday, there was an increased police presence in the neighborhood where Joe lives.

Bashara Alleged Mistress Speaks Out

Meanwhile, Rachel, Bashara’s reported mistress, whose last name we are not using, is speaking out for the first time. She released this statement Sunday:

“I have not spoken to the media because I feel this issue has been terribly exploited and I wish no part in what has become a distraction to a serious murder investigation. I have cooperated fully with the authorities and will continue to do so. I would like to request that the media desist in contacting me, my friends, family and especially my children.

I think the general public should be ashamed of their feverish appetite for gossip. This is not a case that will be decided by what the general population thinks due to the sensational headlines. This can only be proven through the justice system as it works the way it was meant to.A horrible crime has taken place, where a real person has lost her life and a whole family has been ripped apart. I cannot imagine the grief those close to Jane Bashara are feeling. I wish a speedy resolution to this case, so those involved can have some closure and healing can begin for all of us, who in one way or another have lost so much.”

Statement released by Jane Bashara's family

Published On: Feb 10 2012 08:23:43 PM EST Updated On: Feb 11 2012 01:37:46 AM EST

DETROIT -
After recent comments made to the media about Jane our family feels compelled to respond.

It is well-known in our family that Bob and Jane did not have a perfect marriage.

Over the last several years, our family has observed an obvious change in Bob and Jane’s relationship.

We, as a family, are certain that Jane would have chosen to end her marriage rather than participate in an open marriage. We are unaware of any other man in Jane’s life and sincerely believe we would have known about any such person due to our close relationship with our sister/daughter.

We are confident that anyone who knows Jane would agree that she held herself to the highest ideals of honesty, loyalty, ethics and morals.

Any comments made to the contrary should be met with disbelief.

Our family is devastated and deeply troubled by the horrific situation in which Jane’s children have been placed.

Those two incredible young adults have the best of their amazing mother within them, and we will continue to remind them of that and urge them to hold onto all that their mother taught and instilled in them. Jane consistently stressed the importance of strong family relationships and we remain committed to the support and well being of her children. Each and every member of our family loves them both with all our hearts and not a moment goes by that we aren’t praying for and thinking about them.

We respectfully request that all media refrain from any further contact with our elderly parents, who are in a deep and profound state of shock and grief.

Thank you.

The siblings and parents of Jane

Bashara case: Oregon woman testifies in Michigan

Mystery woman in Michigan for testimony in Bashara murder investigation

Published On: Feb 21 2012 05:34:56 PM EST Updated On: Feb 21 2012 06:33:47 PM EST

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

DETROIT -
The Local 4 Defenders have learned a mystery woman from Oregon spent hours Monday giving sworn testimony, under oath, regarding Bob Bashara, his involvement in the BDSM community and the possibility of a double life.

The Defenders were first to report about Internet posts revealing, what police sources say, what was a new life evolving between Bob Bashara, his supposed mistress, Rachel, and a woman from Oregon who would "round out" the relationship.

"If somebody came out from Oregon, they're a witness. They need to get testimony from here," said Local 4 legal expert Todd Flood. "They make it convenient. They get them here and put the testimony under oath to tie up all the loose ends."

Police sources said Bob Bashara was looking to buy a new home in the Grosse Pointe area where the new family of three would live.

Just a short time before his wife Jane Bashara's murder, according to the Internet posts, Bob Bashara flew to meet the woman in Oregon.

That woman now has flown to Michigan at the request of police and prosecutors.

"You're not going to take a witness statement over the phone," Flood said. "Not knowing who the person is, how their reactions are, what the facial expressions are, whether or not you can gauge if they're telling the truth. The Wayne County Prosecutor's office, they're pros."

Flood said this witness from Oregon is crucial to the case which is why she was flown to Michigan under a shroud of secrecy.

Police sources said the woman left Metro Detroit and flew back to Oregon after the testimony.

Gentz told investigators last week that he killed Jane Bashara at the behest of her husband, Bob Bashara, a source said. Police have called Bob Bashara a person of interest in his wife's killing, but neither man has been charged.
Gentz told police he killed Jane Bashara in the garage of her Grosse Pointe Park home Jan. 24 after being promised money and a vehicle by Bob Bashara, a source familiar with the investigation said. Her body was found the next morning in her Mercedes-Benz SUV, which had been left in a Detroit alley.

The Free Press learned that the FBI processed Jane Bashara's SUV for evidence, but the FBI declined to comment.

A Message from the Owners of Hardluck Lounge

"The Hard Luck Lounge family is very sorry for the loss of Jane Bashara. Our hearts go out to her and her loved ones.
Included in the news stories about this tragic event were reports that there was a dungeon in the basement of our bar.
We felt it was important to let the community know that we were just tenants at Mr. Bashara’s building. Although Mr. Bashara has a space in the basement of the building we are unaware of what is kept in that space. He had no access to our basement space and we had no access to his as these were separate locked areas. Our basement holds nothing more than supplies and stock that would be found in any bar business. Again, our deepest sympathies go out to the Bashara family and we wish them well during their time of mourning."

Attorney: Bob Bashara passed privately administered polygraph test

Published: Thursday, February 02, 2012, 3:20 PM Updated: Friday, February 03, 2012, 3:00 PM

By Jonathan Oosting | joosting@mlive.com

Polygraph results are not admissible in the court of law, but attorney David Griem is working aggressively to defend his client in the court of public opinion.

Griem confirmed this week that he is representing Bob Bashara, the Grosse Pointe Park man who reportedly failed a polygraph test last week as police investigate his wife's murder.

Speaking this morning on WJR-AM 760, Griem said he did not know who administered that original test or what questions where asked.

But he does know this much: "I can tell you he has since taken another polygraph test and passed it," he told host Paul W. Smith.

Griem, who previously represented convicted wife-killer Stephen Grant, had Bashara take a privately administered polygraph test last night. He told the Free Press that questions included,"Did you have anything to do with the death of your wife?"

Bob Bashara reported his wife missing last Tuesday night. Police later found her dead body inside her luxury SUV, which was parked in a Detroit alley miles from their affluent suburban home.

Police have called Bashara a "person of interest" in the case, and an associate named Joseph Gentz reportedly told police Bob Bashara paid him to kill his wife.

Griem questioned Gentz's motivation, explaining that his client had altercations with his accuser in the past.

"This Joe did manual labor for Bob Bashara for a number of years on various homes and commercial buildings that he owns," Griem said. "They were in a dispute over money."

The Wayne County Prosecutors Office tells MLive.com that it has not received any warrant requests in the case.

Bob Bashara's mistress talks to police then moves out of Grosse Pointe

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

GROSSE POINTE, Mich. (WXYZ) - New details are emerging about Bob Bashara and the reported affair he was having with Rachel, a 50-year-old woman who once lived in an apartment Bashara owned in Grosse Pointe Park.

Phyllis Huxley currently rents an upstairs flat in the City of Grosse Pointe to Rachel.

Huxley tells 7 Action News that soon after Rachel spoke with police investigating the murder of Bob Bashara's wife, she was told by another tenant that Rachel moved out to avoid media scrutiny of the case that has made national headlines.

Huxley says she has spoken with Bob Bashara on several occasions where Rachel lives and has even spotted him walking her dog.

It's unclear what information police tried to gain from Rachel as they investigate the murder of Bob Bashara's wife, Jane, but sources have never named Rachel as person suspected of being involved in the killing.

Grosse Pointe Park Police have named Bob Bashara as a "person of interest" in his wife's strangulation.

Bob Bashara maintains that he was not involved in Jane's murder.

DETROIT -
In an exclusive interview with the Local 4 Defenders, Bob Bashara says reports that he was with his wife the night she went missing aren't true.

Bashara reported his wife, Jane, missing Jan. 24 after she never returned to their Grosse Pointe Park home. She was found dead the next day in her SUV, which was parked in a Detroit alley. She had been strangled.
Marc Santia: What do you believe happened to Jane?
Bob Bashara: I have no idea, none.

Bob Bashara said reports that their cell phones were traced to be together the night she went missing are false. "No, they were never together. We talked, I returned her phone call around quarter to five. She called me about 20 to five. I missed the call because I was working on my property. Our phones were never together."

Marc Santia: Did she mention somebody? Did she mention that there was trouble, did she, there were no phone calls?
Bob Bashara: Nope. I have no knowledge of any phone calls. She didn't mention that there was a problem with anything. I don't believe she had a boyfriend. I don't believe that there was anything like that going on with her.
The couple was married for nearly 27 years.
Marc Santia: Because of these reports of S&M, the affair, what have you said to your son and daughter?
Bob Bashara: Don’t believe what you hear. This has been sensationalized, things have been brought up that aren’t true. The focus needs to be on Jane’s killer.”

Marc Santia: Bob, let's go back to that night. What would it mean to you to find Jane's killer?

Bob Bashara: I think my children, for my family, and yes, for me, I would like to know who is responsible and make them pay, to be punished within our legal system. It would mean a lot to me. It would bring closure to this whole thing, because, like my sister said, I have been named a person of interest and people have pointed the finger at me and all these different issues have come up.

The Detroit News 2/11/12
Grosse Pointe Park— The attorney for Bob Bashara blasted authorities Friday for their handling of the investigation into the slaying of his client's wife and for leaking information in what he called an attempt to smear the Grosse Pointe Park businessman.

"It's like Swiss cheese. It's like being on the Titanic. And the leaks are meant to sound incriminating," David Griem said. "They are calculated. They are an effort to smear Bob, to establish negative public opinion and contaminate the potential jury pool out there."

Griem said the probe of Jane Bashara's death Jan. 24 has been full of errors and irregularities.

He said reports of blood being found Wednesday in a second search of the Bashara home are misleading and particularly damaging.

"Whose blood? We don't even know if it's human blood or of if it's one of those Grosse Pointe coyotes who nailed a rabbit," Griem said, noting recent coyote sightings in the area.

"There was a search 12 days before of the same areas of the house. The experts found nothing. Now they go back and supposedly find suspected blood in a house where hundreds of people have visited to pay their respects to Jane Bashara. Think about the potential for contamination."

Griem said he has no idea if the searches were even legal, and charges police failed to give Bashara copies of the warrants they said gave them access to his home. Without those documents, Griem said he has been unable to determine which judge approved the search.

Workers at Grosse Pointe Park Municipal Court said they could provide no information about warrants until the "returns" — which list what was taken — have been filed. As of Friday, nothing had been filed for Bashara's address on Middlesex Boulevard.

Griem said police also have not asked to examine Bob Bashara for wounds or scratches.

"Jane had a number of broken fingernails," he said. "… If there had been a scratch on him (Bashara), a bruise on him, that would have been evidence, but they haven't asked for that," Griem said.

A handyman not only confessed to his role in the slaying of Jane Bashara during an interview with Grosse Pointe Park police, but also admitted his involvement to an assistant Macomb County prosecutor, it was revealed today.

The new information was made public during a hearing to decide whether Joseph Gentz should be allowed to continue supervised visits with his 10-year-old daughter, who is currently in foster care. Judge Kathryn Viviano opted not to allow visitation for at least two more weeks.

"He made what amounts to a full confession," Assistant Prosecutor Mark Richardson told the judge in arguing that visitation should be stopped. Richardson said the confession was made to another assistant prosecutor within the last few weeks.

In addition, Richardson said, Grosse Pointe Park police officer in charge of the Bashara case told Macomb County prosecutors that Gentz, 48, is a person of interest in the homicide. Gentz earlier told police he killed Bashara on Jan. 24 at the behest of her husband, Bob Bashara, but Gentz was later released.

No one has been charged in the death of Jane Bashara, who was strangled and left in her SUV in an alley on Detroit's east side.

Bob Bashara's lawyer: We're investigating a new suspect

Privately hired defense investigators have swung their focus away from Joseph Gentz and on to a new suspect in last month's strangulation murder of Jane Bashara, her husband's lawyer David Griem said Wednesday.

Griem, whose client Bob Bashara remains the sole person of interest in the case, said he hoped to have enough evidence gathered by next week to turn over to officials.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office and Gentz's lawyer reacted coolly to Griem's announcement.

"The investigation is continuing and we have no comment," said prosecutor's spokeswoman Maria Miller.

"I'll wait to see what he has," said Susan Reed, who was appointed to represent Gentz. "This could make my job easier."

Jane Bashara's killing "may share certain similarities" with the 1996 murder of Oakland County eye doctor Deborah Iverson, who was found strangled in the backseat of her Toyota Land Cruiser left abandoned on a remote Macomb County road, Griem said.

Iverson's husband was a prime suspect for months -- even after passing two polygraph examinations -- but a young couple confessed to snatching the doctor from a Birmingham parking lot because she looked wealthy and they needed money.

"We've changed direction because of certain actions taken by the police and prosecutor's office" in releasing Gentz, who reportedly has made numerous statements to police, a prosecutor and private citizens linking himself to Jane Bashara's killing, Griem said.

Jane Bashara was found strangled in the backseat of her Mercedes-Benz SUV, which had been ditched in an east-side Detroit alley the morning after her husband reported her missing.

In a series of statements he made after walking into the police station, Gentz said he killed Jane Bashara at her husband's behest. In one version, he said he was promised cash and a used Cadillac; in another, he said he was forced to do it at gunpoint.

Gentz was released after spending 72 hours with police. Questions have arisen about whether Gentz's Miranda rights to remain silent and to have a lawyer present were honored while he was in custody.

"If they believed Gentz took part, there's absolutely no way they'd let him out on the street," he said. "I really believe if he were a target they never would have released him."

Griem said his investigators, including a retired FBI agent, have been "beating the bushes and we've come up with at least one person of interest -- a brand-new person."

He would not identify or characterize the person his team is looking at, but did say "we believe this person was not acting alone."

He said his team is waiting until it gathers "concrete evidence" before releasing details for fear the person might flee.

The Detroit News

2/24/12
Grosse Pointe Park— Police on Thursday impounded as evidence a Cadillac that a handyman reportedly told police was promised as partial payment for murdering marketing executive Jane Bashara.

The car, which was parked in a St. Clair Shores lot for weeks before it was impounded about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, is registered to the victim's husband, Robert Bashara, who was called a "person of interest" in the case by Grosse Pointe Park Police Chief David Hiller.

Handyman Joe Gentz, who performed odd jobs at some of Robert Bashara's rental properties, told police his boss paid him less than $2,000 to kill Jane Bashara and dump her body in a Detroit alley to make it look like a carjacking, according to police sources.

Gentz also reportedly told police that Bashara promised him the used Cadillac as payment.

However, Bashara's attorney, David Griem, said Gentz had merely inquired about buying the car but didn't have enough money.

Although multiple police sources say Gentz confessed to killing Jane Bashara in her garage before driving her Mercedes sport-utility vehicle to a secluded alley on the east side of Detroit, police later released him, prompting Griem to question whether investigators believed Gentz's account.

Griem on Wednesday also questioned why the Cadillac hadn't been seized as evidence. When asked Thursday about the timing of the impound — after his comments appeared in The Detroit News and other media — Griem said, "I guess better late than never."

Investigators are awaiting evidence, including blood and hair reportedly taken from the Basharas’ garage. "Our lab is processing all evidence in the Bashara case," said Michigan State Police spokeswoman Tiffany Brown.

Meanwhile, Griem said Robert Bashara has hired two former FBI agents to investigate the murder.

He said the retired agents have identified their own person of interest, and that they would turn his name over to police when their investigation is finished.

Case of slain Grosse Pointe woman takes new twists and turns
Saturday, February 25, 2012

dailytribune

In the weeks before Bob Bashara’s alleged mistress walked off the job for good, her work performance grew increasingly poor and her relations with colleagues became disrespectful, according to documents in her personnel file.

Rachel Rene Gillett also added Bashara’s name as an emergency contact person, according to personnel records released by Wayne State University to The Macomb Daily under a Freedom of Information Act request.

The documents also show that police investigating the death of Jane Bashara of Grosse Pointe Park have not sought any of Gillett’s emails or phone records from the university.

Gillett, the reputed girlfriend of Bob Bashara, was fired from her job as a secretary in the development and alumni affairs office at Wayne State.

A copy of her termination letter, written by Michelle Fallscheer, the director for planned gifts in the development and alumni affairs division, stated she had failed to successfully complete a 60-day qualifying period in her job classification.

But the real reason she was fired might be because she left the office on the day Jane Bashara’s body was found in a Detroit alley and never came back.

“I’m not going to discuss that with you,” she said in a brief telephone interview on Friday night. “I have nothing to say about any of that.”

A copy of her electronic time slip released to the newspaper shows she worked for 2.5 hours on Wednesday, Jan. 25 — the day Jane Bashara’s body was discovered — and took the rest of the day off as a personal day.

She never returned.

The 51-year-old Gillett’s name surfaced early on in the investigation into the strangulation of Jane Bashara, a business executive and mother of two children.

The body of Jane Bashara was found in the backseat of her Mercedes Benz SUV on Detroit’s east side, about six miles away from her home. Her husband had reported her missing the night before.

Linked to ‘person of interest’

In the days after the body’s discovery, there were multiple media reports detailing Bob Bashara’s secret double life apart from his wife, tales of a sex dungeon and out-of-state trips with a girlfriend.

Although Bashara told reporters he was only friends with Gillett, there was evidence that he spent a good deal of time with her including traveling to a relative’s wedding out of state on New Year’s Eve. Several photos of the two dancing and socializing have surfaced.

The story took an unseemly turn when Internet posts on a sadomasochism website suggested Bob Bashara was involved in an S&M relationship with Gillett, where he was a dominatrix called “Master Bob.”

The postings indicated the two planned to bring a third woman into the relationship.

Bashara owned an underground sex dungeon in the basement behind a building he owned on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Park where witnesses said he took women for various sex games.

Gillett was renting an apartment above the facility.

Grosse Pointe Park police have been tight-lipped about the murder — the first in that community in more than two decades — and no arrests have been made.

Police Chief David Hiller has publicly labeled Bob Bashara as a “person of interest in the murder,” even though another man has allegedly confessed to the crime.

Handyman Joe Gentz, an acquaintance of Bob Bashara, told police Bashara gave him cash and a used Cadillac to kill Jane Bashara.

Gentz, who authorities have described as mentally disabled, was held for several days for questioning before being released.

Early last week, however, police impounded the Cadillac, which had been parked in a St. Clair Shores lot for weeks.

Since Gillett has publicly stated that she has cooperated with the police investigation, The Macomb Daily asked Wayne State for any search warrants submitted by police for her email or phone records. The university responded by stating none existed as the police had not sought the records.

The bizarre story of extra-marital affairs and seedy sex parties seemed to be in conflict with Gillett’s past.

The attorney representing Bob Bashara held a press conference Friday morning to address questions swirling around his client in the Jane Bashara murder case.

Bob Bashara was not present at the press conference.

Jane Bashara, 56, was found dead Jan. 25 in her sports utility vehicle parked in a Detroit alley. An autopsy showed the cause of death was strangulation.

Bob Bashara has been named a person of interest in her murder, but has not been charged with any crime.

When asked where he stood in regards to charges against his client Griem replied, "I hope that there will be no charges coming against my client."

Griem also said, "The interesting question is to be asked today is to be asked of Grosse Pointe Park Police Department..

What do we do with Joe? I think they’re in a tenuous position of what to do."

Joe has been in police custody since walking into the Police Department and admitting he was involved in Jane Bashara's murder. He walked into the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department Tuesday afternoon.

This week, Joe has been telling police he was there for Jane's murder, but sources have confirmed his story has changed on several occasions.

When asked why he hasn't held a press conference before Friday Griem said, "I think sometimes lawyers are so keen about having their pictures taken and appearing in the print media and seeing themselves on TV that what is best for the case and what is best for the client is overridden by the attorney's wanting to be in the media."

He also discussed why Bob Bashara addressed the media on Wednesday. "Bob wanted very badly the day after the funeral to say something because you all (the press) were camped outside his home. He thought it was the right thing to do. So I told him to just do it."

Images: Bob Bashara holds news conference

Griem said he has not been to the police department with Bashara since he was hired as his attorney. "It is because the few times I've talked with you all (the press) I've finished every interview with every statement we are ready and willing to sit down with the police again."

Attorney appointed for Joseph Gentz in Jane Bashara case

1:01 PM, February 6, 2012

By Joe Swickard and Gina Damron
Detroit Free Press Staff Writers

Detroit defense attorney Susan Reed has been appointed to represent Joseph Gentz, who has told investigators he killed Jane Bashara.

Reed, president of the Wayne County Criminal Defense Bar Association, was named by Presiding Judge Timothy Kenny of the Wayne County Circuit Court criminal division.

“I was appointed to represent him and that’s all I’m going to say,” Reed said this morning.

Gentz was released by Grosse Pointe Park police Friday afternoon without charges after spending three days in custody. His current whereabouts are unknown.

• Related story: Life for self-professed murder accomplice has been tough, friend says

Last week, Gentz, a sometimes handyman, walked into the police station and told investigation he had a role in the murder of Jane Bashara, a Grosse Pointe Park marketing executive who was found strangled in her Mercedes-Benz SUV that was ditched in a Detroit alley.

In a series of evolving accounts, Gentz said he killed Jane Bashara in her garage on Middlesex Road at the behest of her husband, Bob Bashara. In one account, he said he was promised cash and vehicle, but in another he said that Bob Bashara forced him to carry out the killing.

Labeled the only person of interest in the case, Bob Bashara told the Free Press on Saturday that he did not kill his wife or have it done. He said that he hired Gentz for odd jobs but had argued over the pay with Gentz making increasingly angry demands for more money.

Bashara’s lawyer David Griem called the appointment “a good idea. And it appears to me that it may be too little, too late.”

Reed is known as a solid, forceful but publicly low-key attorney who has taken on an array of high-profile cases defending widely scorned clients.

Defense attorney Steve Fishman said that Gentz was given a good lawyer.

“Judge Kenny did the right thing and made the right choice,” Fishman said. “And from what I’ve read, it’s obvious he needs one and it may be a little late.”

He said that Reed’s “an excellent lawyer and not afraid to represent unpopular clients and she’s no grandstander.”

In the past two years, Reed represented Jason Gibson, who was convicted in the fatal shooting of Detroit Police Sgt. Brian Huff and wounding of several other officers who were investigating a reported incident at a vacant house, and Peter Dabish, who was convicted in the torture murder of Diana DeMayo at the Ft. Shelby Towers in downtown Detroit.

She also defended Venson Hibbitt, who murdered two men at a Detroit east side garage. Hibbitt’s brother Lamar Moore died in a gunfight with Detroit police when he attacked the Northwest District a year ago.

Until a few years ago, Gentz and his father were members of the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association, which members say is a family-oriented group.

Member said Gentz, who dropped out of the group after his father died, was a tall and muscular guy not known for being violent.

A woman living at the apartment complex in St. Clair Shores where Gentz once lived said he had been evicted in June, but continued squatting in apartments. Kellie Roddy said he threatened her.

“That is not the Joe Gentz we remember,” Alex Vitek, a member of the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association, said.

Gentz told investigators he killed Jane Bashara in her garage, a source familiar with the investigation has said.

Bob Bashara has said that when he returned home from working on a rental property at about 8 p.m. Jan. 24, his wife was not home. She was found dead the next morning.

He was purported to have been having a relationship with a woman who works at Wayne State University — an allegation Bob Bashara denied during interviews with reporters Saturday.

The woman he is alleged to have been in the relationship with said she would not make a statement.

Memorial Scholarship Established for Jane Bashara

The Grosse Pointe South Mothers' Club has established a scholarship in memory of Jane E. Bashara, who worked as a past president of the organization.

By Sara Eaton Martin, the author, February 6, 2012

Members of the Grosse Pointe South Mothers' Club set up a memorial scholarship to honor the late Jane Bashara, who served as a former president of the organization.

Current Club President Allison Baker emailed an announcement of the memorial scholarship to Grosse Pointe South High School families, employees and alumni recently.

In the announcement, Baker describes how difficult the loss of Bashara has been for the club members, many of whom were close to Jane Bashara. In the announcement, Baker also invites anyone who wishes to honor Bashara to donate to the scholarship fund in her memory.

"Those of us who knew her hope that the contributions she made both for her children and the greater good of the community are not overshadowed by the horrible way in which we lost her," Baker says in the email. "Jane was a humble and generous volunteer who dedicated so much of her time to our community. She will be remembered as a diplomatic, unselfish and inspirational leader by all who had the honor of knowing her as a fellow parent, Mothers' Club member and friend."

Bashara was not only a past president of the South Mothers' Club but also very active within the schools during her own children's attendance there, her friends of said. At a candlelight vigil following her unexpected death, her friends described her as endlessly supportive, selfless and a mentor to all who encountered her. Bashara also won the Golden Apple award from the district for volunteerism.

The Mothers' Club includes parents of current South High School students and aims to give back to the school, students and teachers by awarding scholarships to students, funding to teachers for programs they otherwise would not be able to introduce in the curriculum and preservation grants for the building itself, which has a historical designation.

Donations to the scholarship fund in Jane Bashara's memory should be mailed to:

The Mothers' Club of Grosse Pointe South
11 Grosse Pointe Blvd.
Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police from both Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park searched the home of Jane Bashara as her husband was being questioned and given a polygraph test in connection with her death.

Police carried computers and other items out of the home, they took countless pictures inside and used search dogs to look for any evidence.

Jane Bashara's body was found early Wednesday morning in her SUV in Detroit.

Neighbor Alex Jones says he can't believe this is happening and he feels sure Bob Bashara wasn't involved.

Police are calling the husband a person of interest.

Bashara attorney says Gentz's lawyer is trying to work out a deal

Posted: 02/07/2012
By: Mary Conway

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - The attorney for Bob Bashara tells 7 Action News that he is convinced that the court appointed attorney for Joe Gentz is involved in negotiations with the Wayne County Prosecutor's office concerning possible charges.

David Griem says he is saddened by that because "Joseph Gentz has shown himself to be an unreliable witness."

The Wayne County Prosecutor's office is not commenting on that, only saying that there are no new developments today.

The attorney appointed to represent Gentz, Susan Reed, told 7 Action News that she does not comment on active or ongoing cases.

In the meantime Gentz's brother is speaking out in an interview with ABC News. Gentz's brother talked about the man he knows and why he thinks he would have participated in such a crime.

Gentz went to police last week to tell investigators that he was involved in the killing of Jane Bashara and he reportedly claimed Bob Bashara is the one who orchestrated his wife's death.

The day after Jane Bashara's body was found in her Mercedes Benz on Detroit's east side, her husband talked to Action News.

Bob Bashara said, “I believe that she was out running an errand and doing something and someone either carjacked her, kidnapped her, did something like that”.

“It’s just unthinkable that this happened to her and what she had to suffer. I am just so upset about it”, said Bashara.

Michigan State Police Crime Lab investigators search Bob Bashara's home; Attorney Griem responds

Posted: 02/08/2012

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich., (WXYZ) - Bob Bashara was seen leaving his home while Michigan State Police Crime Lab investigators and Grosse Pointe Park Police searched his Grosse Pointe Park home Wednesday.

The search went through the morning and into the early afternoon.

While investigators were at the home, attorney David Griem said he asked Bashara to come to his office at the Guardian Building in Detroit. Bashara left in his own vehicle.

According to Griem, Police refused show his client, Bob Bashara a warrant but said they had one when they arrived to search the Bashara home.

"I'm looking for some fairness from the police, some fairness from prosecutors and fairness from the media," said Griem.

Griem said another attorney was at the home and wanted to monitor the search.

"He was refused that request. Not only did they refuse that request, they commanded that he sit down in the family room with Bob and his mother while the search was conducted," explained Griem.

"Bob Bashara has nothing to hide," he said. "This case is truly the most bizarre case I've ever been involved in."

During the search, Michigan State Police moved in and out of Bashara's garage while Grosse Pointe Park Police entered the home as well.

Griem commented, "That garage has been open to anyone and everyone the last 10 days." He then said if they present any evidence taken from this search he will ask the court to suppress it.

Police were seen taking pictures around the perimeter of the Bashara home.

Evidence was taken from the home and placed into a police vehicle.

Bashara's wife, Jane was found dead in her SUV January 25 in the area of 7 Mile Road and Hoover in Detroit.

Bob Bashara was named as a person of interest in the case.

Local 4 Defenders Exclusive: Face-to-face with Joe Gentz

Published On: Feb 08 2012 03:10:34 PM EST Updated On: Feb 08 2012 06:46:59 PM EST

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

DETROIT -
Local 4 Defenders exclusive: Joe Gentz sits down in his first face-to-face television interview since the murder of Jane Bashara. And there’s something he wants you to know about him.

In an undisclosed location, Gentz spoke with Local 4 Defender Marc Santia.

At time with tears in his eye, Gentz said he had a message for Metro Detroiters. He said his message was different than what's been played out in the media. He said he wants the public to know he only walked into the Grosse Pointe Park police station for one reason.

Marc Santia: What do you want people to know?

Joe Gentz: I want them to know the truth. I just want truth. I want justice. I want real justice to be done. I want justice real bad.

"I have seen a lot in my lifetime," Gentz said. "Been to the Persian Gulf War, been to Singapore. I had a good life."

Now, his life is in the spotlight as Gentz finds himself back in the middle of Jane Bashara's murder investigation.

"I have a heart, yes," he said. "I have a heart of gold. I'm honest. I'm a caring person. I don't do harm. I don't break the law."

Grosse Pointe Park police kept Gentz in custody for three days after allegedly confessing to his involvement in Jane Bashara’s murder.

Multiple sources said Gentz did change aspects of his story, but always maintained one constant: emphatically saying Jane Bashara was killed in the garage of her home.

Local 4 cameras were rolling Wednesday when Michigan State Police executed a search warrant at the home.

Jane Bashara, 56, was reported missing by her husband on Jan. 24. She was found dead Jan. 25 in her sports utility vehicle, which was parked in a Detroit alley. An autopsy showed she died from strangulation.

Gentz has not been charged and no other arrests have been made.

The daughter of Bob and Jane Bashara speaks out for the first time about her mom's murder

Jessica Bashara Speaks Out About Mom's Murder

Posted: 02/08/2012
By: Cheryl Chodun

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich (WXYZ) - Bob Bashara's daughter Jessica says there is no way her dad is responsible for her mom's murder.

"Absolutely not," Jessica told ABC News's Andrea Canning in her first interview.

YOU CAN WATCH ANDREA CANNING'S ENTIRE INTERVIEW ON GOOD MORNING AMERICA ON THURSDAY MORNING.

The 20-year-old college student says tells Canning they need to focus on finding out who killed her mom. She wants to remember her mother and the great person she was.

She knows her dad, Bob Bashara, has been named a person of interest in the case and she knows there have been many reports about her father's personal life.

However, she says that doesn't make her question him. Rather she feels bad for him and what he is going through.

Bob Bashara was with his daughter during the interview. He said he fears people will judge him because of all the publicity and reports about him.

Bashara says he had no reason to kill his wife. He said he believes Joe Gentz, the handyman who confessed to having a part in the murder, is responsible.

According to police sources, Gentz also told police Bob Bashara had a part in the murder as well.

Sources: Joe Gentz's story is solidifying in Bashara investigation

Investigators run down Gentz's story about Jane Bashara's murder

Defenders learn more about why Joe Gentz's story is solidifying

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. -
Multiple sources tell the Local 4 Defenders that Joe Gentz caused harm when he told police investigators he killed 56-year-old Jane Bashara in her Grosse Pointe Park garage while another man forced him to do it at gunpoint.

What happened next?

Sources say according to Gentz, he put Jane Bashara's body into her Mercedes-Benz sports utility vehicle with the help of the other man. Gentz then drove the SUV to Detroit. The other man did not make the trip to the area of 7 Mile Road and Hoover Street, where Jane Bashara was found dead on Jan. 25.

The Defenders have learned that Gentz admitted to throwing the SUV keys down on the driver's side floorboard then leaving the vehicle in an alley near Annott and Pinewood. Gentz was chosen as the driver because he grew up in the neighborhood.

He then walked from the SUV south to a McDonald's on 7 Mile Road near Gratiot Avenue where he grabbed some food while waiting for the bus.

The Defenders have confirmed that police pulled video from that McDonald's surveillance and Gentz was seen on the video from that day, further solidifying his story.

Gentz took the bus to the Rosa Parks terminal in downtown Detroit where transferred to the Jefferson bus back to Grosse Pointe Park.

A short time later, the Defenders have learned Gentz stepped off the bus near the police station and walked to Art's Party Store on Kerchavel. Sources tell the Defenders that detectives have gone to the party store for surveillance video. After buying a pack of cigarettes, Gentz walked home.

One week later, he turned himself into Grosse Pointe Park police.

"I want them to know the truth," he said in an interview with the Defenders.

Police have been disputing Gentz's story. But sources say it's starting to become more concrete as investigators run it down.

Gentz was held in police custody for three days before being let go and appointed an attorney.

No other arrests have been made in connection with Jane Bashara's murder.

Could Bob Bashara's plans for a new life outlined in internet posts be a motive for murder?

Posted: 02/09/2012
By: Scott Lewis

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

GROSSE POINTE PARK (WXYZ) - The 7 Action News Investigators are uncovering new information tonight in the Jane Bashara murder case. It involves Bob Bashara's secret double life.

Investigator Scott Lewis has learned Bashara was making plans for a new life in the weeks and months preceding his wife's murder, plans that included not one, but two other women, and the three of them sharing a home.

The question is; could Bob Bashara's secret plans be a motive for murder?

On New Year’s Eve, as the clock ticked closer to 2012, Jane Bashara was home in Grosse Pointe while her husband Bob was hundreds of miles away with his mistress Rachael Gillett. He was at the wedding of Gillett’s daughter in South Carolina, and was photographed dancing with the mother of the bride.

According to Jane’s friends, she thought Bob was in Florida golfing with his buddies. And that’s just a small part of Bob Bashara’s secret double life.

Internet blog posts obtained by the 7 Action News Investigators suggest Bob Bashara had a mistress and was planning to bring a third woman into the relationship.

As we first reported last week, Bashara was in the process of buying a large home on Kensington in Grosse Pointe Park when Jane was murdered. The blog posts say Bashara planned to share the home with his mistress, Rachael Gillett and another unidentified woman from Oregon. All three were involved in an alternative lifestyle known as BDSM, which stands for bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism.

The posts are from a website called alt.com used by people involved BDSM.

A knowledgeable source says the posts were put up by Rachael Gillette using the screen name MBs_bella. MBs stands for master Bob’s slave, and bella means beautiful.

On August 2011, MBs_bella posts, “We are looking for a special girl, a third to round out our relationship…someone who would live with us on a full-time permanent basis who is free to commit to being a part of a loving, nurturing male dominated home. Master Bob is the head of our relationship.”

The posts show that, for years, they were seeking out another woman for three-way relationship known as a triad.

Another post from MBs_bella from September of 2010 says, “We are looking for one unique individual who can fit with us and our personalities…an attractive female, age from late 30’s to early 50’s, must be able to able to relocate to us…willing to obey his directions concerning finances, health issues, and self growth…gainfully employed. ”

According to the blog posts, Bob Bashara and his mistress found the woman they were seeking.

Last November, posting as MBs_triad, Rachael Gillette writes, “We are a true D/s triad…a group of three. Master Bob is the head of our home, respected and cared for by His two lovely slaves, bella and J.”

In mid-January of this year, shortly before Jane Bashara’s murder, blog posts say Bob Bashara flew to Oregon to meet the third female slave in the triad.

On January 12 th Rachael Gillett writes, “Oregon also has one very special girl that I am just dying to meet! And now for this weekend only…Oregon also has my Master!”

According to one of her friends while Bob was in Oregon, Jane thought he was out of town on business.

A source close to Jane Bashara says if she was aware of Bob’s alternative lifestyle and his plans with two other women she did not share it with her friends. The question is; if Bob was planning to set up shop with two other women in a new home, how did Jane fit into that picture? Could this be a motive for murder?

There are also questions about how Bob Bashara could afford this planned new life. According to public records, Bashara’s marital home has an outstanding $534,000 mortgage. The new home was listed at $239,000. Bob Bashara had also fallen behind on taxes on several of his rental properties.

Just yesterday, Bashara sat down with ABC’s Good Morning America for an exclusive interview saying he had no reason to kill his wife.

“Is there any motive that you could have had to kill your wife?” asked ABC correspondent Andrea Canning.

“No, none,” replied Bashara.

“Financial?” asked Canning.

“No, none,” said Bashara.

“Didn’t want to be married to her anymore?” asked the correspondent.

“None whatsoever, we had a very good open relationship,” Bashara replied.

Bashara deflected questions about his affair with Rachael Gillett in the ABC interview, but Bashara’s attorney wasn’t so quick to deny it.

“Is this something you are now possibly willing to admit that he did have an affair?” asked Canning.

“Ah, the term open marriage comes to mind,” attorney David Griem replied.

“And Jane was o-k with that?” asked the correspondent.

“My belief is that it was an open marriage,” Griem replied.

Shortly after Jane Bashara’s body was found in her SUV, Rachael Gillett was questioned by police. Then she dropped out of site.

Gillett’s only public comment is a written statement in which she condemned the media for exploiting the tragedy.

“I think the general public should be ashamed of their feverish appetite for gossip,” she said.

When Bob Bashara was interviewed by police he told them he was just friends with Gillette. Police sources tell me they believe they caught Bashara in a lie on that.

In the ABC interview Bashara pins the murder of his wife on his handyman Joe Gentz who has told police that Bashara paid him to murder Jane and in the end forced him to choke her to death by holding a gun to his head.

Do you believe Joe Gentz?” asked correspondent Canning.

“I do believe he’s the one who did it. He wanted more money from me, he badgered me, and yes, I do believe he’s capable of it,” Bashara replied.

“Yet one of the stories Joe is reportedly telling is that you forced him to kill Jane,” the correspondent said.

“I don’t own a firearm and I absolutely had nothing to do with this. That is a sick assessment on his part. It just shows how deranged he is,” Bashara firmly stated.

The 7 Action News Investigators obtained Rachael Gillette's cell phone number through a source and called her. Investigator Scott Lewis told her he needed to ask her some questions about posts she made on the site alt.com under the screen name MBs_bella.

"I said I don't want to talk to the media," Gillett told Lewis before abruptly hanging up the phone. She did not deny making the posts.

Bashara’s attorney David Griem confirmed that Bashara was trying to purchase the home on Kensington and said he did not know whether Jane Bashara was aware of it. He said when Jane was murdered the real estate agent returned Bashara’s deposit on the home.

Griem could not confirm information in the alt.com web site blogs indicating Bashara was planning to share the home with Rachael Gillett and another unidentified woman because, he said, he has not talked to Bashara about the subject of affairs.

Bashara Attorney Talks Rumors, Blood, Suspicion

February 9, 2012 7:26 PM

GROSSE POINTE PARK (WWJ) – He has been called a “person of interest” in the murder of his wife and, this week, Bob Bashara took to national television to reaffirm his innocence.

Appearing on “Good Morning America,” Bashara once again said he had no part in the strangulation of his wife, Jane — whose body was found two weeks ago in her SUV, parked in a Detroit alley.

But were Bob and Jane Bashara having marital problems in the months before her death? Sources talking to WWJ Newsradio 950′s Marie Osborne say that Jane Bashara became angry when, just days before her death, she learned of an ongoing affair between her husband and a local woman.

On Thursday, WWJ Newsradio 950′s Marie Osborne sat down for a one-on-one interview with Bashara’s attorney, David Griem.

Reporting: Marie Osborne

Griem said the couple had seen a marriage counselor about a year ago but said, beyond that, he has not asked his client about other women or his rumored BDSM lifestyle.

“I can tell you this … there is one thing that I have not discussed with Bob Bashara, and any of this alleged kinky stuff, anything about girlfriends,” Griem said.

Griem said the reason why he hasn’t asked these questions is out of respect for Bashara’s college-aged children.

As for blood reportedly found by police in a second search this week of the Bashara home, Griem is suspicious. “You would think that if there was blood in that garage 12 days ago, it would have been found then,” he said.

The body of 56-year-old Jane Bashara was found in the back of her Mercedes-Benz SUV parked in an alley at Pinwood and Arnott in Detroit on Jan. 25. Her husband reported her missing the night before.

An autopsy showed that she had extensive bruising to her upper body, a crushed windpipe and missing fingernails.

Griem said Jane Bashara clearly put up a fight before she died.

“If you’re breaking your finger nails off, you’re inflicting some wounds,” said Griem. “And, generally, such defensive wounds show up on the assailant’s face, neck and hands.”

Griem said that police spoke with his client four times and his body was never examined.

So, if it’s not Bob Bashara, does Griem believe the true murder is Joesph Gentz — the man who has reportedly confessed to police?

“I don’t know. If I had a crystal ball and we certainly know that the police don’t have a crystal ball either.”

Griem added, however, that Bob Bashara and his children are convinced that Gentz is the killer.

Gentz submitted himself to police for questioning Jan. 31, reportedly claiming he was there the night Jane Bashara was murdered. However, sources say Gentz’s statement that he was hired by Bob Bashara to kill his wife wasn’t enough for prosecutors to issue an arrest warrant for either man.

No charges have been filed and no suspects have been named.

---- TEXT & VIDEO ----

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Rachel Gillett and Bob Bashara were living the life of a happy couple, sources tell us. The two even took a photo together at Rachel’s daughter’s wedding just before new year's 2012.

But since Jane Bashara’s murder Gillett is remaining silent, while Bob is doing interviews – professing his innocence and dodging questions about Rachel.

“I’m not going to comment (on the affair) because it has nothing to do with the case,” Bob Bashara said in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Action News obtained Gillett’s phone number and reached out to her. While she would not speak with us on the phone, Gillett spoke with us via text. We asked her why she has not talked publicly about the case.

“No one wants my side. I've already been judged by the public and media. Remember Amber Frey?" Gillett said via text.

Frey was the girlfriend and mistress of Scott Peterson, the man convicted of murdering his wife and dumping her body in the San Francisco Bay.

In another text Gillett said:

"(Bob Bashara) is fighting for his life. I am just trying to live mine in peace and heal," Gillett said via text.

Sources: $8,000 was price in Grosse Pointe Park mother's killing

Joe Gentz promised pay, used car to allegedly kill Jane Bashara

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. -
Local 4 has learned details about what Joe Gentz told police about being promised to get paid in the murder of Jane Bashara.

Sources said Gentz told police he was forced at gunpoint to kill the Grosse Pointe Park mother in her garage.

The price he was allegedly supposed to be paid for the killing: $8,000.

Sources also said Gentz was told he would receive a used Cadillac.

Gentz was released from police custody and has not been charged.

Jane’s husband, Bob, had been named a person of interest in the case as well, but he also has not been charged.

Bob Bashara is staying quiet.

At his door Friday morning, Bashara told Local 4 reporter Shawn Ley, “I can’t say anything. Nice to meet you.”

Jane Bashara was found dead Jan. 25 in the back of her SUV, which was parked in a Detroit alley. She had been strangled. She had been reported missing the day before by her husband.

Bob Bashara says he wasn't with wife when she went missing

Grosse Pointe Park mother found dead Jan. 25

Bashara talks about night Jane went missing

DETROIT -
In an exclusive interview with the Local 4 Defenders, Bob Bashara says reports that he was with his wife the night she went missing aren't true.
