Remember Bob Bashara -- aka, Master Bob?

If not:

A wife and mother of two was found strangled to death in her car in a seedy Detroit alley. Her husband Bob, an immediate person of interest, turned out to be much more than the dutiful man of the house he portrayed himself to be. Reportedly, he had his own sex dungeon and sex slaves.

On Friday, two HUGE updates to the story.

Sex dungeons, infidelity, hit men and murder were the focus of a Dateline NBC episode Friday night about Grosse Pointe Park's "Big" Bob Bashara, a wealthy and philanthropic real estate mogul now charged with murdering his wife, 56-year-old Jane Bashara.

The episode, available online, is entitled "Secrets in the Suburbs" and features the sordid and riveting real-life murder mystery.

The hour-long investigative report offers perhaps the most in-depth glimpse to date of the man with a secret second life as a "Master Bob," a sex slave master.

Bashara smuggled ketchup, sugar and jelly in prison, officials say

7:41 PM, June 25, 2013

By Elisha Anderson

Detroit Free Press Staff Writer

Behind his prison walls, former Grosse Pointe Park businessman Bob Bashara has been accused of lying and being in possession of stolen property.

The items taken include five packets of ketchup, six packets of sugar, 11 packets of jelly, four napkins and a spoon, according to a Michigan Department of Corrections misconduct report released to the Free Press.

The items, belonging to the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee, were discovered inside Bashara’s wall locker during a cell shakedown June 9, the report said.

Bashara also is accused of lying about how he obtained the items from the prison. He admitted taking them, but said he was given permission to remove them, a claim a prison official said wasn’t true.

“This prisoner had no staff authorization to remove any item,” the report said.
Bashara, who is serving about six and a half to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to solicitation of murder for trying to hire a hit man to kill Joseph Gentz, the man who killed his wife, lost his privileges for five days, according to the report. Gentz told police he killed Jane Bashara at Bob Bashara’s direction.

Bashara has since been charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder, suborning of perjury during a capital trial, witness intimidation and obstruction of justice in connection with Jane Bashara’s death in January 2012. A preliminary examination is set for Aug. 19 in that case.

In addition to the June incident, Bob Bashara was disciplined for not showing up for a call-out on May 30, according to another misconduct report. He lost his privileges for five days in connection with that incident.

Bob Bashara finds trouble while behind bars

Grosse Pointe Park man charged in wife's murder cited for stealing, lying in prison

DETROIT -
Bob Bashara is locked and now in trouble for what he did with ketchup, jelly, spoons, napkins and sugar.

The convict's secret ketchup consumption and his desire to horde condiments has him in trouble with prison guards in Manistee, Mich., where he is being held. The Local 4 Defenders have obtained misconduct reports regarding Bashara.

It appears "Big Bob" lost all privileges for five days after it was found he stole a variety of items from the chow hall and then lied to officials about whether he was given permission.
The report was filed June 9. Bashara was cited for possession of stolen property, theft and lying.

On May 30, Bashara also was written up for being "out of place," which means he was not where he was supposed to be at a scheduled time in prison.

"When a man sits in prison and he causes a ruckus in the prison it's going to make it difficult for him to survive in a lot of different ways," said legal expert Todd Flood.

The problems may not affect Bashara's trial, but they could affect his life.

"He's going to be more restricted. He's going to be put into difficult places. He's not going to be able to take care of his defense as well. He's not concentrating on his defense. His life is going to be in turmoil as this goes on," said Flood.

Warren council to vote on Griem appointment

By NORB FRANZ
norb.franz@macombdaily.com; @norbfranz

Well-known criminal defense attorney David Griem has made a living by grilling individuals, but Tuesday night, he could face tough questions.

Griem recently was appointed by Mayor James Fouts to head the city’s in-house legal staff recently, a job that pays $112,000. Under the city charter, the selection of the attorney or must be confirmed by a majority of the Warren City Council.

Council members will likely query Griem about his hope to return to the same job he held in the 1980s. In between, he worked as principal trial attorney at the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, chief federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit, and in private practice representing accused criminals. He also has defended large corporations in tort, contract and business disputes.

In urging the council to endorse his choice, Fouts said that Griem’s government and private experience would be “a tremendous asset to our legal department and the city as a whole.”

Council President Cecil St. Pierre predicted that a majority of the seven-member council will support the mayor’s nomination of Griem.

“There’s really no reason not to adopt his recommendation, because of (Griem’s) background, knowledge, reputation and just a good overall pick,” said St. Pierre, who works as a lawyer

St. Pierre said the passage of more than two decades since Griem tackled municipal law on a full-time basis shouldn’t be a problem for the city. The city charter hasn’t changed drastically since the 80’s, but numerous new ordinances have been passed or amended.

“I believe for him, it’s going to be like riding a bike,” St. Pierre added.

Councilman Scott Stevens said Tuesday that he wants a copy of the ethics pledge that Fouts requires of appointed department heads and verification that Griem won’t be allowed to moonlight. Stevens also feels Griem should be required to close out his private law practice -– withdrawing from pending cases and transferring clients to other attorneys – before sitting behind a desk at Warren City Hall.

“People of this city need to hear what he has to say,” Stevens said. “There’s definitely some questions.”

For example, Stevens wants to know why Griem, who was raised in Warren, would want to return to municipal law after so many years. Regardless of the answers, he predicted that Fouts has enough votes to successfully choose a third city attorney since voters elected him as mayor in 2007 and again in 2011.

“The mayor owns this council. No doubt, it’s going to pass,” he added.

Griem did not immediately return a telephone call to The Macomb Daily on Tuesday afternoon.

In recent years, two of Griem’s most highly publicized cases involved Stephen Grant, the Washington Township father accused of killing and dismembering his wife, Tara Grant, and Bob Bashara, the Grosse Pointe Park man charged with hiring a hit man to kill his wife, Jane.

In connection with the Bashara case, Griem was ordered by a Wayne County Circuit judge to pay $8,000 in attorney and court costs, for civil contempt of court.

Griem also helped former Warren councilman Charles Busse win an acquittal on public corruption charges.

Current Warren City Attorney James Biernat, a former Macomb County Circuit Court judges, plans to resign in mid-July. Citing family considerations and a need for a more flexible schedule, Biernat, 72, hopes to stay in legal circles by serving as a visiting judge.

Hearing held for Bob Bashara in his murder trial lays out what appears to be lengthy case

Witnesses will be flown in from across country to testify in Bashara's murder trial

DETROIT, Mich. -
Only the Local 4 Defenders were in court Thursday for a hearing to lay out some information in the upcoming trial of Bob Bashara.

The Defenders learned the trial will likely be long, and very detailed. There's nearly 8,000 pages of discovery and witnesses will be flown in from across the country to testify.

Watch: Uncut: Court hearing for Bob Bashara

"Mr. Bashara hired a private investigator to search out the "real killer" in the case and that investigator amassed several different witness statements from people. It is my belief that those things are discoverable," said Lisa Lindsey, of the Wayne County Prosecutors Office.

The potential key witnesses include Bashara's former mistress Rachel Gillette and a mystery woman from Oregon. Bashara's son, who currently lives in Iowa, may also be called to testify.

"At this point I'd like to certainly meet with the attorneys on a fairly regular basis," said Bashara.

Bashara asked many questions and was concerned his attorneys may not have enough time to prepare for the trial.

The preliminary hearing for Bob Bashara will be held in September.

Bashara court hearing rescheduled

By JAMESON COOK
jamie.cook@macombdaily.com; @jamesoncook

The next court hearing for murder defendant Bob Bashara was pushed back three weeks Thursday and turned into a conference, according to Wayne County prosecutors.

Bashara’s Aug. 19 preliminary examination was rescheduled as a “pre-examination conference” among attorneys and the judge, and the exam was moved to Sept. 9 in front of Judge Kenneth King of 36th District Court in Detroit, prosecutor spokeswoman Maria Miller said. Bashara, 56, of Grosse Pointe Park, is accused of arranging the slaying of his wife, Jane, 56, a Mount Clemens native, at their home in January 2012.

The change came two days after it was revealed that Bashara, imprisoned for trying to hire someone to kill Joe Gentz, was disciplined for smuggling condiments from the cafeteria at Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee. A prison guard found 11 packets of jelly, six packets of sugar, five packets of ketchup, four napkins and a spoon inside the wall locker of his cell, according to a misconduct report by the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Bashara also lied to a guard about taking the condiments. He claimed he had permission from a corrections lieutenant, who denied he gave him approval.

Bashara had his prison privileges revoked for five days, on top of another five days for his May 30 violation for failing to show up for the “Law Library callout,” the report says. “Not attending is out of place,” the report says.

Meanwhile, the rescheduled preliminary examination will determine whether probable cause exists to advance Bashara’s case to Wayne County Circuit Court for a trial.

Bashara hearing revolves around computer evidence return

By JAMESON COOK
jamie.cook@macombdaily.com @jamesoncook

Posted: Tuesday, 07/09/13 06:07 pm

A female, out-of-state witness in the Bob Bashara murder trial is going to court to request the return of two computers confiscated by police.

A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday morning in front of Judge Timothy Kenny in Wayne County Circuit Court in Detroit.

The issue is a peripheral part of Bashara’s case in which he is charged with arranging for the 2012 murder of his wife, Mount Clemens native Jane Bashara, 56, in the garage of their Grosse Pointe Park home. A preliminary examination in the murder case is scheduled for Sept. 9 in 36th District Court in Detroit.

Bashara, 55, will appear at Wednesday’s hearing via video from the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee, where he is serving a minimum 80-month term for trying to have key witness Joe Gentz killed in June 2012 while Gentz was housed in a Wayne County Jail facility. Gentz, 49, is serving 17 to 28 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, admitting he strangled Jane Bashara.

Bashara’s attorney, Mark Procida, said the computers contain evidence that has been copied by law enforcement and is in the process of being copied by defense attorneys.

He said the witness was promised the return of the computers.

It was unclear if the witness is an Oregon woman who has been reported to have had an Internet relationship with Bashara at the time he was having an affair with local woman Rachel Gillette. Media reports indicated the Oregon woman traveled to Michigan to talk to law enforcement regarding the case.

Bashara has been tied to an alternative lifestyle involving sex dungeons, according to reports.

The Oregon woman’s testimony could be used to help Wayne County prosecutors show motive.

Prosecutors have indicated the investigation also took them to Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Florida and Texas.

Bashara is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation of murder as well as witness intimidation and obstruction of justice for his wife’s death and the investigation.

Bashara, who owned rental properties, allegedly threatened and paid his handyman Gentz, formerly of St. Clair Shores, to kill his wife of 26 years. Jane Bashara’s body was found Jan. 25, 2012, in her vehicle parked on Detroit’s east side.

DETROIT -
Bob Bashara appeared via video Wednesday at a hearing where a judge ruled that a witness will get her computers back that were confiscated as evidence.

Three computers were taken from Therese Giffin in March so the prosecution and defense could copy any evidence from them.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Kenny ruled the computer be returned to Giffin on Friday.

Bashara didn't object to that.

Judge orders computers returned in Jane Bashara murder investigation

10:27 AM, July 10, 2013

By Elisha Anderson, Detroit Free Press Staff

A Wayne County Circuit Court judge ordered three computers taken from a woman during the investigation of Jane Bashara’s death be returned to her by 4 p.m. Friday.

The computers were the subject of an investigative subpoena and were sought by prosecutors for possible evidence, said Presiding Judge Timothy Kenny.

Bashara’s husband, Bob Bashara, has been charged in his wife’s death and was in court today via a video connection from a prison in Manistee, where he is being held.

The relationship between Bashara and woman who owns the computers and lives out of state is unclear.

“As to what is on these computers, we have no idea,” Bashara’s attorney Mark Procida said.

Procida said he suspects there are e-mails between Bashara and the woman on the computer. The hard drives have been copied by prosecutors and will be copied by the defense.

Bob Bashara is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder, suborning of perjuring during a capital trial, witness intimidation and obstruction of justice in connection with the his wife’s death. The Grosse Pointe Park woman was found dead in her SUV in Detroit in January 2012.

“He’s doing OK, given the circumstances,” Procida said of Bashara.

Bashara is said to have hired a hit man, Joe Gentz, to carry out the killing. Gentz is serving to 17-28 years in prison in Jane Bashara’s death.

Bob Bashara makes court appearance via video

Posted: Jul 10, 2013 9:55 AM CDTUpdated: Jul 10, 2013 10:18 AM CDT

By Amy Lange, Fox 2 News

---- TEXT & VIDEO (3:23) ----

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -
Already serving time in a murder-for-hire scheme, Bob Bashara once again answering a judge's questions on Wednesday. This latest hearing is part of the 1st degree murder case Bashara is now facing involving the death of his wife Jane.

Bashara is currently serving a 6-year sentence at a correctional facility in Manistee after he pleaded guilty to attempting to hire a hit man to kill Joseph Gentz, the handyman who has confessed to killing Bashara's wife.

Appearing via video feed today's hearing for Bob Bashara was to determine when and if three computers taken from an acquaintance of Bashara would be returned.

The laptop and two desk top computers belong to Therese Giffen, who lives out of state, and were taken into evidence back in March and she wants the computers back. Little is known about her or her relationship with Bob Bashara.

Attorney for Bob Bashara, Mark Procida said, "I suspect that there are emails, they were acquaintances. They're, again we haven't had a chance, we haven't been told by the prosecutor. I don't know if they've gone through, what's on those computers."

Procida says both the prosecution and defense will copy what's on those computers and return them to Giffen's attorney by Friday. What's clear is there's so much that's not known about this case.

"We were told there's over 8,000 documents. We're still maybe three quarters of the way through those documents," Procida said.

FOX 2 Legal analyst Charlie Langton says, "this is not a run of the mill murder case. It's a huge investigation that's spanned a long time. Kym Worthy didn't bring charges right away, until they actually got all kinds of evidence. And now we're just seeing one little tiny bit of a very complicated piece of evidence. No, I think this is a very involved case. I think we're going to learn a lot about Bob Bashara. His lifestyle and his involvement with other women, that somehow may go to some kind of motive for killing Jane Bashara."

Procida says what we do know is there will be no plea in this case, it will go to trial.

Judge orders return of computers in Bashara murder case

George Hunter
The Detroit News

Detroit — Three computers that were seized by prosecutors, which likely contain email exchanges between murder suspect Bob Bashara and an out-of-state female acquaintance, were ordered returned to the woman by a Wayne Circuit judge Wednesday.

In a six-minute long pre-trial hearing, the former Grosse Pointe businessman made an on-camera appearance in Chief Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny’s courtroom. Dressed in a blue prison jumpsuit with an orange stripe down the side, Bashara heard Kenny order prosecutors to return three computers — a laptop and two desktop computers — to Therese Giffin, described as Bashara’s friend.

“Those computers were the subject of an investigative subpoena by prosecutors who decided to do a forensic analysis,” Kenny told reporters after the brief hearing. The computers were turned over to Wayne County Sheriff’s computer analysts, who made an “image” of the hard drive, which Kenny said was akin to “making a Xerox copy of them.”

Kenny also said defense attorneys will have the opportunity to make images of the computer hard drives for their own investigation.

Bashara’s attorney, Mark Procida of the State Public Defender’s Office, said he’ll return the computers by Friday. He added after the hearing he wasn’t sure what was on the computers although he said, “I assume they’re emails.”

Bashara is accused of hiring his handyman, Joseph Gentz, to kill his wife, Jane Bashara. Gentz was convicted of second-degree murder after admitting he strangled Jane Bashara in her garage on Jan. 24, 2012.

Gentz, who said he dumped Jane Bashara’s Mercedes-Benz SUV in an east-side Detroit alley with her body inside, is serving a 17- to 28-year prison sentence.

Bashara is already serving a 6- to 20-year sentence in the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee after he pleaded guilty in October to trying to hire a furniture store owner to kill Gentz in jail while he was awaiting his murder trial.

It was from the Oaks Correctional Facility that Bashara made his video broadcast appearance Wednesday morning. He appeared to have lost weight. Procida said he would attempt to have his client moved to the Wayne County Jail in order to make it easier to meet with him.

Bashara, 55, is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder, suborning of perjury during a capital trial, witness intimidation and obstruction of justice.

Procida said he doesn’t know where Giffin is from or the nature of their relationship.

“I assume she’s from Illinois or Oregon,” Procida said. He added that Giffin was an “acquaintance.”

Bashara, the former president of the Grosse Pointe Rotary Club, had his privileges revoked in prison for five days when guards found unauthorized packets of ketchup, sugar and jelly, along with a spoon and napkins, in his cell. Bashara lied about the items, claiming he’d been given permission to take them from the prison kitchen, according to prison officials.

A Sept. 9 preliminary examination is scheduled in Bashara’s case.

Procida nixed the idea of Bashara taking a plea deal: “There’s going to be a trial,” he said.

Gentz's bad behavior in prison could affect Bashara trial

Joe Gentz in prison but causing problems which could affect his role as witness in Bob Bashara's trial for wife's murder

DETROIT -
Joe Gentz is locked up but causing big issues behind bars in New Haven.

The Local 4 Defenders have obtained documents showing Gentz has been written up twice for his bad behavior. On one occasion he was holding his cell door open as it was trying to close. He had no authorization to obstruct the door and refused to move when ordered.

On another occasion he refused to take a test that would measure his mental capacity and skills set. Because of the issues certain perks have been taken away from Gentz. He wasn't allowed to have any visitors.

Gentz also was written up earlier this year at another prison for his bad behavior. Will these issues present a problem at Bob Bashara's trial. Gentz is seen as a key witness in Bashara's trial but his behavior behind bars could be called out in court. Will he no longer be seen as a credible witness?

Meanwhile, Bashara has had his own issues behind bars. He was written up for stealing large amounts of ketchup, jelly, sugar and spoons from the prison cafeteria. He then lied to prison guards about his secret stash.

"He's going to be more restricted. He's going to be put into difficult places. He's not going to be able to take care of his defense as well. He's not concentrating on his defense. His life is going to be in turmoil as this goes on," said legal expert Todd Flood.

Gentz, who was the Bashara family handyman, took a deal and pleaded guilty to second degree murder for his role in Jane Bashara's death. Bob Bashara has pleaded not guilty to to charges he's facing in connection with his wife's murder.

Gentz to appear for post-conviction court hearing

A post-conviction motion in the Joe Gentz case is the subject of a hearing Wednesday morning at Wayne County Circuit Court in Detroit.

Attorneys on both sides of the case would not reveal the nature of the hearing in front of Judge Vonda Evans. But Gentz’s attorney, Susan Reed, said Tuesday it does not involve Gentz being issued two misconduct violations in prison.

Gentz, 49, formerly of St. Clair Shores, who is house at Macomb Correctional Facility in Lenox Township, is expected to attend the hearing.

Gentz is serving 17 to 28 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder last December for the January 2012 murder of Jane Bashara, 56, in her Grosse Pointe Park garage. Gentz told police he strangled the Mount Clemensnativeat the bequest and under threat of her husband, Bob Bashara, 55, who is charged with her murder.

It was also learned recently that Gentz received misconduct violations one week apart in May.

He refused May 14 to take a Test of Adult Basic Education Test, claiming he did not have to because he had a high school diploma, according to records of the state Department of Corrections. His penalty was loss of privileges for five days starting May 25.

On May 7, he held open his automated cell door that was closing, causing “undue wear and tear on the door mechanism,” a report says. He was penalized to 48 hours “toplock,” meaning he was confined to a top bunk except for meals, May 11-13, the report says.

Convicted Murderer, Joe Gentz, Expected To Ask Judge To Withdraw Plea

July 16, 2013 6:18 PM

DETROIT (WWJ) – Joe Gentz, the handyman who was sentenced to prison for murdering Grosse Pointe Park woman Jane Bashara at the request of her husband, is expected to withdraw his guilty murder plea in court tomorrow.

WWJ’s Charlie Langton reports Gentz will ask Wayne County Judge Vonda Evans to withdraw his plea to second-degree murder and to go to trial.

Gentz was sentenced in February to serve 17 to 28 years in prison.

“I have to say that this is a very unusual legal ploy,” said Langton. “Court rules at least allow Gentz to ask the judge within six months after the sentencing to withdraw his guilty plea. Remember Joe Gentz has had a lot of problems with mental issues – although he was found competent to stand trial by numberous psychiatrists, presumably Joe Gentz will say that he was under duress during the sentencing and the plea.”

There is no known reason for Gentz’s change of plea and Langton says there is no guarantee that the judge will accept and order a trial in the case.

WWJ will be in court when the motion by Gentz is heard.

Jane's Walk GP

Yesterday.

Whether her vision promoted projects at her children’s school or for little league baseball, her church or something else in the community, the people whose paths she crossed remember Jane Englebrecht Bashara in many different ways. She is consistently described as a strong, intelligent, capable, energetic, magnetic, kind and compassionate woman. These qualities served Jane aptly as a leader, mother, business woman and fundraiser, and she used these gifts well to help make the world a better place.
“Jane’s Walk” is a labyrinth being planned in her honor. A labyrinth is a walking meditation. It is not a maze, for there are no tricks or dead ends, and you cannot lose your way. Labyrinths date back more than 3 millennia and are found in many cultures and civilizations all over the globe. Recently, labyrinths have been rediscovered and used as a way to quiet the mind by providing a peaceful and reflective walk.
The vision of “Jane’s Walk” evolved as a way to remember Jane’s example and provide just such a quiet, meditative and peaceful place in the Grosse Pointe Communities. Much community support and enthusiasm has been expressed. St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Grosse Pointe Woods was Jane’s home church and is honored to provide the construction space for the labyrinth on the east grounds of its property. A committee of volunteers has recently come together to make “Jane’s Walk” a reality. For more information about this project, please contact co-chairs Kathie Groschner or Kate Colborn at janeswalkgp@gmail.com.

Sources: Handyman Joe Gentz to ask court to withdraw guilty plea

(WXYZ) - Sources have confirmed to 7 Action News that handyman Joseph Gentz is expected to ask the court to withdraw his guilty plea on Wednesday morning.

Gentz was set  to appear in court on Wednesday morning for a post-conviction motion.

Gentz had pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death of Jane Bashara. He was sentenced to 17 to 28 years in prison in exchange for his testimony against her husband, Bob Bashara.

Bob Bashara has been charged with first degree murder. Gentz told the court that Bashara offered him money to kill his wife and forced him to do it. That's a claim Bashara has denied.

The judge could choose to deny Gentz's request.

Joe Gentz changes mind, stands by his guilty plea

Joe Gentz appeared in court Wednesday morning.

DETROIT (AP) -
A handyman who said he was coerced into strangling a suburban Detroit woman says he'll stick by his guilty plea.

Joseph Gentz was transported to the Wayne County courthouse after telling a judge that he wanted to withdraw his guilty plea to second-degree murder. But within minutes and after a reprimand, he changed his mind Wednesday and was returned to prison.

Judge Vonda Evans told Gentz, "This is not a game."

The 49-year-old Gentz has admitted killing Jane Bashara (buh-SHER'-uh) at her Grosse Pointe Park home in 2012. He says he was forced to do it by Bashara's husband, Robert Bashara.

Gentz is considered to be a key witness in the murder case against Bashara, who's awaiting a hearing to determine if there's enough evidence for a trial.

Handyman convicted in Bashara murder ends attempt to withdraw plea

Detroit— Joseph Gentz, the Grosse Pointe handyman who pleaded guilty to the murder of Jane Bashara, briefly appeared in court Wednesday to withdraw an attempt to remove his plea.

Gentz had originally written Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Vonda Evans a letter about withdrawing his plea.

His defense lawyer, Susan Reed, said Wednesday the letter was written after Gentz received erroneous information from a "jail house lawyer."

Evans admonished Gentz, saying was wasting tax payers time by reversing his decision.

"This is not a game," Evans said from the bench as Gentz squirmed and let out a barely audible response that he did not want to withdraw his plea.

Reed added "he wants to stand by his plea."

After a short break, Evans granted Reeds’ request that the letter be sealed.

Reed told reporters following Wednesday's hearing that she became aware of the letter Gentz wrote to Evans a week ago.

Reed said she doesn't believe Gentz's initial request to withdraw his guilty plea will hurt him as a witness in the upcoming Bob Bashara murder trial because he ultimately stood by his plea.

Gentz was convicted of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 17 to 28 years in prison after admitting to strangling Jane Bashara, a public relations executive and Grosse Pointe Park resident, to death in her garage on Jan. 24, 2012.

Gentz said he dumped Jane Bashara’s Mercedes-Benz SUV in an east-side alley with her body inside. The handyman, who is developmentally disabled, said Jane Bashara’s husband, Bob, hired him to kill her.

Bob Bashara was charged in April with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, suborning of perjury during a capital trial, witness intimidation and obstruction of justice.

In October, Bob Bashara pleaded guilty to trying to hire a furniture store owner to kill Gentz in jail while the handyman was awaiting his murder trial. Bob Bashara, 55, received a 6 to 20-year prison sentence on a conviction in that case.

Joseph Gentz writes judge to reverse guilty plea, then changes mind

After the hearing, Reed said Gentz’s actions don’t hurt him as a witness, and he is standing by his plea.

“Joe has been manipulated by people throughout this, and this is just another example of someone trying to manipulate him,” she said. “And once we sat down and discussed it … he has confidence in his attorneys and he realized that any questions and concerns that he has, he should bring them to us before listening to somebody else, especially someone in jail.”

Reed said she explained to Gentz that withdrawing his plea would mean again facing a charge of first-degree murder and, if convicted, life in prison.

During the hearing, Evans told Gentz that if he withdrew his plea, the original charges would be reinstated. She asked Gentz if he wanted to withdraw his letter to the court.

“Yes, ma’am,” he said.

Evans told Gentz that if he is unsatisfied, he needs to contact Reed.

Reed said she read Gentz’s letter two weeks ago...

Handyman Joe Gentz Recinds His Request to Withdraw His Plea in the Jane Bashara Case

Handyman Joe Gentz decides not to change his plea in the murder of Jane Bashara.

Posted by Edward Cardenas (Editor), July 17, 2013 at 11:09 am

According to his defense attorney Susan Reed, as she spoke on a live feed on WXYZ.com, Gentz got "erroneous information" from a "jailhouse lawyer."

The actions by Gentz did not play well with Evans, who warned him that "this is not a game."

"This county is suffering financially and every time we have to bring you down here, that is money the county is expending," Evans said. "I am not going to continue to do this Mr. Gentz."

Handyman Will Stick By Guilty Plea In Grosse Pointe Park Murder

July 17, 2013 11:22 AM

DETROIT (WWJ) – It’s yet another strange development in the already bizarre murder case of former Grosse Pointe Park businessman Bob Bashara and his handyman turned hitman.

Reporting Charlie Langton

WWJ Legal Analyst Charlie Langon said Judge Vonda Evans wasn’t having any patience with Gentz in this, shouting, “This is not a game,” and that his behavior was wasting taxpayer dollars.

As it turned out, said Langton, the whole thing hadn’t been Gentz’s idea to begin with.

“In court today it was revealed that Joe Gentz found what was called a ‘jailhouse lawyer’ who manipulated Gentz into writing a letter to Judge Vonda Evans, asking him to withdraw his guilty plea,” Langton said.

But when Gentz’s real lawyer, Susan Reed, explained that withdrawing his guilty plea would automatically reinstate first degree murder charges — for which Gentz could spend the rest of his life in prison — Gentz had second thoughts.

Handyman Joe Gentz Wants to Change his . . . No, Never Mind

July 17th, 2013, 12:20 PM

The big question is: What the heck was that about?

...

Judge Evans gave him a little tongue lashing, saying: "This is not a game Mr. Gentz." She warned him not to waste the court's time.

...

If anything, his visit to court was a way to break up the monotony of being behind bars.

Bashara attorney says no plea deal

Kathy Ryan Staff writer

July 18, 2013
We won’t be taking a plea. We plan to go to trial.”

That was the pronouncement of attorney Mark Procida, who is the public defender now representing Bob Bashara on first degree murder charges in the death of his wife, Jane.

Procida was in Wayne County Circuit Court July 10, representing Bashara at a hearing on evidence subpoenaed by prosecutors in March. The evidence in question, three computers, belong to a woman who was identified as a witness in the case of the 2012 murder of Jane Bashara.

Judge Timothy Kenny ruled the computers be returned to the woman, who lives out of state. Both sides in the case had been making copies of the hard drives and the computers were in the possession of Bashara’s legal team. Procida assured the court he would have the computers returned to the woman’s attorney by 4 p.m. Friday, July 12.

In addition to a first degree murder charge, Bashara also faces several other charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, obstruction of justice and witness intimidation.

Bashara made a brief appearance at the hearing in front of Kenny via video conference. He is currently incarcerated in the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee, where he is serving seven to 20 years for attempting to hire a hit man to kill Joe Gentz. Gentz pleaded guilty to killing Jane Bashara, but said he did so at the behest of Bob Bashara.

Procida was appointed by the court to represent Bashara on the murder charges, after Bashara told the court he had no money to hire an attorney.

While acknowledging the preliminary examination on the charges will probably occur as scheduled on Sept. 9, Procida said he would not be prepared to go to trial until after the first of the year.

“There are 8,000 documents that need to be reviewed,” he said. “There is no way we could go to trial before the end of this year.”

Procida said he hopes to have Bashara moved closer to Detroit to help prepare for trial.

“I haven’t been able to spend much time with him,” he said, “and it would be easier to prepare if he was closer to Detroit.”

Bashara faced disciplinary action at Oaks for taking and concealing several items from the dining hall, including ketchup packets, jelly, sugar packets and paper napkins. In prison, these items are commonly used for a concoction dubbed “prison wine.”

He has also been cited by prison officials for lying.

Bashara will be back in Wayne County Circuit Court at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, for his preliminary examination.

Prosecutors: Bob Bashara's alternative lifestyle part of motive for murder

8:08 PM, August 19, 2013

By Elisha Anderson
eanderson99@freepress.com
Detroit Free Press Staff Writer

New details of the case against Bob Bashara emerged in a Detroit courtroom Monday as prosecutors laid out the time line of hundreds of phone calls that took place on the Grosse Pointe Park businessman’s phone — before and after his wife’s death — and gave what they called part of Bashara’s motive.

Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey said Bashara sought people to do physical violence to a human being for money in the months leading up to Jane Bashara’s death, including a person he knew from his lifestyle in BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadomasochism).

Bashara’s attorney quickly objected to the mention of BDSM and questioned its relevance.

“We’ve taken such strong measures to make absolutely sure that everything was sealed” defense attorney René Cooper said. “And then within three sentences, we’re hearing about the BDSM lifestyle.”

There will be upcoming testimony and discussion about that lifestyle, Lindsey countered.

“The BDSM lifestyle is going to be a part of his motive for committing this crime,” she said.

Lindsey cited several witnesses who said they had conversations with Bashara about violence prior to his wife’s death.

One friend, identified as witness No. 63, was asked by Bashara if he knew anyone who would “rough somebody up” for money, saying he needed it done to a tenant, prosecutors said.

Another conversation with witness No. 151 dealt with Bashara asking to have a woman “T-boned or run over by a car,” Lindsey said during the pre-examination hearing that took place before 36th District Judge Kenneth King.

In addition, a text message sent by Joseph Gentz more than a month before Jane Bashara’s death showed Gentz’s state of mind before the killing, prosecutors said.

“When you get up, I really need to talk about something. If I know something about someone about to do someone in, where do I go?” the text message read. “I have to watch my (expletive). Please call me hon, I do not want to die.”

Lindsey said it was sent in December 2011 after a conversation between Bob Bashara and Gentz, who has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and said Bashara offered him money to kill his wife and threatened him if he didn’t go through with it. It’s a claim that Bashara has denied.

Bashara, who is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder, suborning of perjuring during a capital trial, witness intimidation and obstruction of justice in connection with his wife’s death, wore glasses and jail blue garb Monday.

The slimmed-down Bashara appeared via a video connection from Manistee, where he is serving time in prison after pleading guilty to trying to hire someone to kill Gentz.

Prosecutors sought to admit evidence they said showed Gentz’s state of mind as well as statements by an alleged coconspirator in the case. The state of mind will be allowed as evidence, but King will make a decision later on the statements.

Lindsey also told the court that Bashara’s phone records provide evidence of a conspiracy, a claim the defense denied.

There were 472 phone contacts between Bashara and Gentz from Sept. 27, 2011, to Jan. 30, 2012, she said.

During the period of Jan. 21-24, there were 36 calls between the two men, 33 made by Bashara to Gentz, prosecutors said. Jane Bashara was reported missing Jan. 24 and found strangled the next day in her SUV.

Cooper said evidence will show the two men were working as businessman and handyman. He said his client was at the bar with a prominent attorney when his wife was killed, which contradicts Gentz’s statement that Bashara was with him when Jane Bashara was killed.

Bashara will be transferred to the Wayne County Jail as attorneys prepare for his preliminary examination scheduled for Sept. 9, Cooper said after the hearing.

Rene Cooper, 51, who works for the Legal Aid and Defender Association of Detroit, was charged by Wayne County prosecutors with three counts of indecent exposure after the women, ages 19, 22 and 27, flagged down an officer.

They said Cooper pulled down his pants and exposed himself around 6 p.m. Oct. 31 before running down the street with his pants down, according to a police report. He was arrested a short time later.

Cooper did not return phone calls Thursday.
...
According to court records, Cooper has three previous indecent-exposure arrests. In one case, he was acquitted, and another was dismissed.

In 1995, he pleaded no contest to indecent exposure and resisting arrest and was ordered to go through a counseling program, court records said. His law license was suspended for six months.

While neither an admission of guilt nor a declaration of innocence, a no contest plea is treated as a conviction.

Prosecutor: Desire for kinky sex led Bashara to have wife killed

George Hunter
The Detroit News

Detroit— Prosecutors said Monday they plan to introduce evidence showing Bob Bashara’s penchant for kinky sex was a motive for murdering his wife, and that he contacted several people about having her killed before settling on his handyman, Joseph Gentz.

Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey said during a hearing at Frank Murphy Hall of Justice Monday that in the months leading up to Jane Bashara’s January 2012 murder, Bob Bashara asked several friends if they knew anyone who would kill or “rough someone up” for money. Among those he allegedly contacted was an acquaintance from the BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadomasochism and masochism) lifestyle.

Bashara’s attorney, Rene Cooper, objected when Lindsey brought up the fact that Bashara knew the man from the bondage community. Lindsey countered that the former Grosse Pointe businessman’s lifestyle was relevant because “the BDSM lifestyle is going to be part of his motive (for murder).”

Bashara, 55, has been charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder, suborning of perjury during a capital trial, witness intimidation and obstruction of justice in his wife’s death.

Police sources told The News that at the time of Jane Bashara’s slaying, Bob Bashara was attempting to purchase a house a few blocks from his family home in Grosse Pointe Park, where he planned to set up a kinky “playhouse.” He and his girlfriend Rachel Gillett, with whom he attended parties in the sex dungeon he operated in the basement of his Detroit tavern, were contacting women, including an Oregon resident, about moving into the house.

Lindsey described several meetings in which Bashara asked acquaintances if they knew anyone he could pay to hurt or kill someone.

A man identified only as “Witness 151” said Bashara told them he wanted someone who could take care of a woman; that he wanted her “T-boned,” according to Lindsey.

The witness said he introduced Bashara to Gentz in September 2011. Jane Bashara, a Grosse Pointe Park public relations executive, was strangled in her garage on Jan. 24, 2012. Her body was dumped in her Mercedes sport utility vehicle in a Detroit alley about six miles from her home.

Gentz pleaded guilty to the killing and was sentenced to 17-28 years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder. He also has maintained that Bob Bashara hired him to commit the murder.

Bashara is already serving a 6- to 20-year sentence after he pleaded guilty in October to trying to hire a furniture store owner to kill Gentz while the St. Clair Shores handyman was in jail.

According to prosecutors, there were 472 phone conversations between Bashara and Gentz between Sept. 27, 2011, and January 2012. Lindsey pointed out that prior to the slaying, most of the contacts were initiated by Bashara; after the slaying, Gentz initiated the majority of contacts.

The purpose of Monday’s hearing was for King to rule on two motions by the prosecutors: to admit Gentz’s state of mind; and to admit statements of a co-conspirator. Wayne County Circuit Judge Kenneth King said he would admit the evidence about Gentz’s state of mind, but would hold the other motion in abeyance.

After the hearing, Cooper said authorities have agreed to have his client moved to the Wayne County Jail.

DETROIT -
The case against the Grosse Pointe Park man charged with the murder of his wife, after he allegedly paid someone to kill her, picked back up again Monday.

Bob Bashara appeared via video for a pre-examination hearing.

The drama in the courtroom was off the charts as attorneys on both sides battled it out.

Jane’s sister sat quietly in the courtroom taking notes and listening to the tragic details of the case.

Prosecutors laid out a list of potential witnesses and phone call logs between Bashara and handyman Joe Gentz.

They say Bashara reached out to several different people to allegedly have his wife killed.

Allegations surfaced that Bashara originally wanted his wife killed in a car accident. Prosecutors revealed he wanted the handyman to inject his wife with a lethal dose of insulin.

The defense called Gentz's competency into question.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9.

Bashara is charged with first-degree murder in connection with his wife's death.

Jane's body was found in her Mercedes-Benz SUV on Jan. 25, 2012. The SUV had been abandoned on Detroit's east side.

Bashara already is serving up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to trying to hire someone to kill Gentz while the handyman was in the county jail.

Gentz has said he was told to kill Jane by her husband.

Gentz is serving a 17-year sentence after admitting he strangled Jane.
